Why was people's hair so thin and wispy in 1970's? Was it bad nutrition and diet or someth

Did the shampoos have too many chemicals in them?

I think you're mistaken. There was just as much thick hair back then as there is now. The wispiness of your hair is a genetic thing. Although it may be minimally increased by conditioners and hair treatments, if you don't have thick hair to start with it won't get a totally different consistency. Take a look at some of the old hippie movies. Long flowing hair was quite the fashion, and length tends to hold the hair down and closer to the head than shorter hair, but you can still tell the difference between the really fine hair and the naturally thick hair.

I don't recall that being an issue in the 70s. In fact, seems like afros were in back then. A lot of girls and guys did wear their hair long and straight - that was the fashion. Perhaps that's why you think it was "thin"....
